The National Football League (NFL) is the highest level of American football at the professional level. Each regular season has 17 weeks with each team playing 16 games and one bye week. Regular season play ends in late December or early January, with the post season ending after the Super Bowl. Players in the NFL are all members of the NFLPA or National Football League Players Association. All players belong to three different levels that affect their rights to negotiate their contracts.
Drafted players who have not played their first year can only negotiate with the team that originally drafted them. A team may name a player a franchise player, which takes away the right to negotiate but only affects a small handful of players in any given year.
